Track: Dead Ghosts - I Sleep Alone

Vancouver garage rockers Dead Ghosts are busy recording the follow-up LP to their excellent debut on Florida’s Dying from 2010, but they’ve been releasing a steady stream of tracks to their Soundcloud page to tide over eager fans. “I Sleep Alone” is scheduled to be put out on a 7” by Randy Records later in the year, and it’s a prime example of their trashy, reverbed-out 50s-style rock n’ roll.

Track: Gary Wrong Group - Post Natal Pre Death

The world at large got screwed out of the chance to buy the first single from former Wizzard Sleeve mastermind Gary Wrong. After an epic pressing plant failure, only 178 copies of the 7” were pressed and the project was halted forever. Fuck that nonsense. Luckily, Total Punk Records has good news for fans of drug-addled psychedelic punk. Later in the year, the label will drop a 12” EP featuring the two tracks from the aborted 7” with some bonus tracks. “Post Natal Pre Death” is one of those extra jams, a sci-fi sludge dirge with scary electronically treated vocals and swirling synths from Wrong’s bandmate Quintron (yep, that Quintron). Turn it up loud and fry your mind.

Track: Surgeons - Whip Them Lord

Here’s a blast of filthy, blown-out sludge punk from the fine folks at Total Punk, who have been cornering the market in that genre with their recent releases by GG King and Gary Wrong. “Whip Me Lord” will be the first vinyl offering from LA’s Surgeons, a band featuring members of Le Face. This track rips HARD and it sounds like Video or maybe your older brother’s Germs records if they were caked in toxic waste.

Track: E.T. Habit - Venomous (Tongues Descent)

Where does HoZac Records keep finding bands like this? In the case of E.T. Habit, the simple answer is “Chicago,” but the real answer is somewhere out in the cosmos, man. “Venomous (Tongues Descent)” is the A side of their upcoming 7” single, and it’s a four minute fireball of start-stop psychedelic punk that works in a lengthy drum break in the middle before getting a little spacy, then finishes up with sections of skin-crawling hippie weirdness. It’s pretty similar to prime Hawkwind, but with a nasty modern edge. There’s still limited gold editions of the single available, so head over to HoZac’s site and snatch one up before it’s gone.

Track: Horsecop - You’re From Cincinnati? That Must Suck!

Cincinnati is always a few years behind the times, and thank whatever God you worship for that. The Queen City might seem woefully out-of-touch to some, but we know good fucking bands when we hear them. Horsecop is the best throwback 90s punk rock band you’ve heard in forever, and they just dropped a crucial new EP called Tuesday Night Beers With Horsecop on Bandcamp. “You’re From Cincinnati? That Must Suck!” Us midwestern rubes who still listen to NOFX and Screeching Weasel might disagree.

Track: Natural Child - Mother Nature’s Daughter

Natural Child isn’t fucking around with this classic rock stuff. For those still digesting the Stones-y country-rock influences all over their latest album For The Love Of The Game, this track, from an upcoming 7” set to be released this summer by Jeffery Drag Records, will be even more of a shocker. Here’s “Mother Nature’s Daughter,” which sprawls over five minutes, features a blazing epic guitar solo, and sounds like a vintage outtake from Neil Young & Crazy Horse in their prime. Track: Holy Wave - Spooky Fucking Blues

Summer’s just around the corner. What better season is there for hazy, droning psychedelic rock? Holy Wave is an Austin band that specializes in trippy, Velvets-inspired stuff, a perfect soundtrack for blazing heat and endless days. Check out this track from their recently released EP The Evil Has Landed, dig that tense organ sound, and throw them three bucks for a download. Fans of the Black Angels or Radar Eyes will love this shit.

Track: The Hiya Dunes - Black Fur

Fucking cassette tapes, man. It seems like some of the best stuff released this year has been coming out on little, limited edition tapes. Gap Dream? Danny James & Pear? Lantern? All tapes. Here’s yet another crucial analog release, this time from New York quartet The Hiya Dunes. “Black Fur” has a vibe that’s both laid-back and sinister at the same time, with caveman reverb surf rock that comes off like the Allah-Las slumming on a gypsy caravan. Seagreen Records has the tape, limited to 200 hand-numbered copies with a mini-zine designed by the band, for a measly five bucks. If you’re low on lunch money, the band is offering donation-based downloads and free streaming on Bandcamp.

Track: A. Rex & J. Rex - Rock & Roll Heart

According to the only bit of information on this Brooklyn’s duo’s Facebook page, “A. Rex & J. Rex concern themselves with two things only: (1) rock and (2) roll.” Judging by the super-catchy “Rock & Roll Heart,” that means rockabilly-influenced tunes that mix a punk rock attack with a huge, booming drum machine.
