Nashville-based Infinity Cat Records released Heavy Cream’s second album, and California garage rocker Ty Segall produced it. But don’t let your frenzied fanaticism over those concepts be the only reason you listen to Super Treatment. It is a rough love kick in the pants. Jessica’s distorted vocals make for a delectable surprise sauce on top of Mimi’s perfectly-cooked guitar licks, and Tiffany relentlessly fills any possible thinking space with sweet, sweet rhythm. After the album has fist pounded itself at you, and you decide to listen to it again as you bike towards sunny mayhem, you might have some time to think on possible truths therein. You’ll find that Tiffany is not intentionally distracting you from a dearth of them.
Heavy Cream embodies a word that doesn’t exist yet for the female version of machismo. [Ed: Femmechismo?] Their lyrics all portend great, decidedly post-pubescent, under-the-surface happenings that reek of pride and defensiveness. Songs like “79” (Super Treatment’s header) and “Louise” are sung to girls who try too hard, like the voices you never hear from wisely on-looking wallflowers. (Wallflowers whose chances at public speaking are grandly aided by powerful lungs and persuasive tone.)

Ty Segall did say earlier this year that he would be releasing 3 LPs in 2012. We already know about his collaborative album with White Fence, out soon through Drag City. The 2nd album to be released will be by Ty Segall Band, a collective made up of Ty, Mikal Cronin, Charles Moothart and Emily Rose Epstein. Slaughterhouse is the name of the upcoming LP and it’s first offering, “Wave Goodbye” is a Black Sabbath worship sludge hammer, and shows off Ty’s insane versatility.
I know most of you have been spinning Vol. 1 of White Fence’s double LP Family Perfume, and are eagerly awaiting for Vol.2, as well as his collaborative LP with Ty Segall. If that’s too much White Fence for you or not enough, we have something new for you anyway. Green Balloon is another impending release for Mr. Presley. On a recent Saturday afternoon, I piled into a car with fellow GET BENT staffers Mariana and Joey for a journey down to Orange County to witness unruly teenagers let loose in the suburbs — and maybe catch some music, too.
The occasion? Burgerama — the ambitious all-day, all-ages music festival organized by the good folk at Fullerton’s Burger Records. Having just returned from SXSW where we all attended numerous Burger-sponsored showcases, the evening was to be the pinnacle of a very, very Burger-filled week.
After a much-needed stop at a nearby In-N-Out Burger, we made our way toward the venue—an unassuming theatre called the Observatory. Situated in a sprawling business park on the outskirts of Santa Ana, about 45 minutes south of Downtown Los Angeles, the Observatory isn’t exactly the place you’d expect Burgerama’s hyper-exhaustive collection of bands to step foot in — let alone be invited to play; the place looks less like a theatre than it does the shell of an early 80s dance club repurposed into a roller rink repurposed into nondescript medical offices. (I was quite saddened to learn that, despite the Observatory’s disco-esque vibes, the building and the accompanying 1500-person capacity theatre itself were actually constructed in 1994.)
We got the first taste of Ty Segall & White Fence’s collaborative LP last week in the form of “I Am Not A Game”. The supergroup recently stopped by Room 205 and played another new track off the LP, “Scissor People”, and this time around we’re getting more than a taste, this is a fucking feast. “Scissor People” is a near 6 minute long shred fest delving into Hawkwind-ish territory, and a pure psych freak-out if there ever was one.

My favorite kind of art always seems to have the same kind of description: “we found this (insert item name) and decided to experiment and see what we can do with it.” San Francisco’s Devo/Mummies mashup punks POW! got themselves a $5 camcorder from Goodwill, and filmed and edited a music video for the one-off single “Hangin’ Out (At Home)”. The track was recorded by the enigmatic Ty Segall, and at the perfect single time of two minutes and forty-five seconds, “Hangin’ Out” is a catchy song about chilling at home, cooking, smoking cigs, and playing with your cat.
POW! are currently writing and recording a full-length that should see the light of day sometime this year. Until then, this is a great song to put on while you get your picnic items together.
You’ll be able to get your hands on a copy of Nashville quartet Heavy Cream’s follow-up to 2010’s Danny in a few months. When news came out about a collaborative LP between Ty Segall and Tim Presley’s White Fence, I expected a batch of songs that featured Presley’s laid-back Kinks-style psychedelic pop mixed with Segall’s spikier, noisy guitar rock. “I Am Not A Game” doesn’t disappoint,and it leans toward the heavy side of classic 60s British psych rock, meandering its way through a druggy forest before culminating in an extended guitar/organ duel that races to the finish.
