A week after SXSW—a smorgasbord of beer, GET BENT bands, and everything good in this world—it seemed impossible to believe that anyone could do it all over again, and live to tell the story.
Well, I did, and so did Burger Records. Not only did the Burger boys throw some of the best shindigs in Texas—Bill fucking Murray and free burgers at Burgermania, really?— but they then shimmied their way up to San Francisco to throw another party worth bragging about. Thanks to the lovely folks at Total Trash Booking, one hell of a Boogaloo was the talk of the town.
So how does it feel to be responsible for putting some of the best parties of the year?
Kanye West to Produce Next Oh Sees Album

In shocking, but somehow inevitable news, San Francisco garage rock kingpins Thee Oh Sees announced yesterday that their upcoming LP, The Master’s Throne Is Worth Getting Blazed In, will be produced by none other than world famous hip-hop impresario Kanye West. Reached for comment by phone, Oh Sees frontman John Dywer said that West “just showed up after we got done playing one of our shows at South By Southwest. We have two other albums coming out this year, so why not a third?”

Piling into a car at 11pm on the way to a concert is nothing new. We do that damn near every night. Driving for 16 hours on your way to a monstrous festival on board a cruise ship in the Bahamas, that’s a different story. We were doubly stoked to get to Miami for Bruise Cruise after an 11th hour invite and expedited passport delivery, given that INC (International Noise Conference) featuring the Laundry Room Squelchers and Nashville’s own Leslie Keffer was going on there the same weekend as well. If you’re going that far, it’s gonna be worth it. We made it down to Miami in time to hang out with Leslie and the noise crew at Rat Bastard’s place on South Beach before heading out for the official Bruise Cruise pre-party.
Captains Jonas Stein of Turbo Fruits & Michelle Cable of Panache Booking knew how to start the weekend off right—with an open bar hour. Sailor Jerry rum set the tone for a vacation of rum everywhere as the Stage venue filled up to capacity and probably beyond with mostly Bruisers checking each other out for the days in close quarters ahead. Jacuzzi Boys and The Soft Pack started it off with tight sets before King Khan & The Shrines got things wild with a party set that was easily the highlight of the night, even with Thee Oh Sees and Fucked Up following. We headed over to catch the end of the INC set a few blocks away, and ran smack into the height of Miami late-night. Sweet dirty dive bar with noise bands blaring and everyone already trashed by the time we arrived, the place was surrounded by crackheads pitching whatever they had to get some cash (and not deliver any drugs). By the time that show was over, everyone around had their place full of squatters for the night so we were forced to hunt out a roach motel at 4am, but whatever, Bruise Cruise was in the morning!

You’ve probably never heard of Cincinnati psychedelic garage trio The Harlequins before, but that’s about to change with the release of their self-titled, self-released second album. After playing several hundred shows in the midwest over the past four years, they’ve honed their sound to a razor-sharp mix of Thee Oh Sees’ sonic experimentation and the loose-limbed pop songcraft of Guided By Voices, best represented by the short, sharp “Backwards Forwards.”

Ahhh Spring is just around the corner. The time when nature comes in full swing, flower buds spurt, bird’s eggs hatch, and rock and roll impropriety moves to the great outdoors—isn’t the cycle of life grand? For our west coast compatriots, or anyone with access to space travel machines (airplanes, Transporters, and the like), the 2012 lineup for the annual Burger Boogaloo has just been divulged. We aren’t sure what sounds more tempting than three days of rockin’ rancor with the likes of Thee Oh Sees, King Tuff, Cosmonauts, White Mystery, Audacity, Pangea, Gravys Drop, Guantanamo Baywatch, and a hand full of other prime Burger Records bands set to commence March 23-25. Oh and speaking of prime and burgers, rumors are circulating about an epic grilling of a 100 pound burger patty. Light up that barbie, grab the six packs, don those shades, and let the festivities begin! More details to follow, but it can only go up hill from here!
