“It’s a Mess” is a podcast that sandwiches some of our favorite garage jams, L.A. local bands, and a few guests between dick jokes and giggles.
The boys are back! Episode IX offers the It’s a Mess community an explanation for a longer-than-expected holiday break, a late end-of-the-year top ten list, some creepy, creepy, terrifying messages from OKCupid, and a little lovin’. Another day, another record in our giveaway. Christmas is the season where we’re supposed to think about God, right? Well, The Beets have a song on this 7” from Captured Tracks called just that. Win it by posting a youtube video in the comments of your favorite holiday song, and we’ll make a mix of all the songs to post later this week. There are tons out there, so feel free to post more than one. To get you started, here’s a personal favorite that really brings out the red, green, and blue in me.
And the winner of the Vivian Girls 7” from yesterday is Sean Neppl. Send your address to getbentup@gmail.com!
It’s not even close to spring time, but I’m cleaning house, leaving Nashville, and hitting the road to Austin after the holidays. Since I don’t have space to bring all my records with me, and instead of hocking all of them at the used vinyl joint, I’ve hand picked 12 of my favorite 45s that I want to share with you! After all, Christmas is coming, so let’s spread some of that cheer.
Every day from now til the 25th will feature one 7” that’s up for grabs. And each 7” will require something different, so pay attention! You can also RSVP to the facebook event here for updates.
So for day 1, we’re gonna keep it simple. Enter to win the Radar Eyes “Shakes” single that was released exclusively for their Hookup Club subscribers by simply commenting on this post!
We at GET BENT! have been fortunate enough to hear The Beets upcoming LP Let The Poison Out (review here) and we totally love it. Sorry, you guys still have to wait a few more days to pick up a copy, but the good news is you might not have to go very far. The Beets will be making some stops along the East Coast in support of the album. If you thought theses guys were weirdos on record just take a look at the live clip (terroreyes.tv session) above, definitely something you’re not going to want to miss.
Let The Poison Out will be available October 24th on Hardly Art. Scope out the tour dates after the jump.
Forgive me for asking, but are the Beets starting a cult? The chirpy tracks on Let The Poison Out sound like they were recorded by a hippie church ensemble on acid trying to make it through mass, even if the lyrics are more existential than spiritual (“And if you die, whatever,” the Beets sing on first single “Doing as I Do”, before assuring us that Jesus, God, and Satan don’t care, either). Let The Poison Out would be a tad touchy-feely if the Beets weren’t so eccentric in their delivery, which has the trippiness of early Sufjan Stevens records, but the polish of his later ones. The best songs on the record are shambling and easy-going, like an earthier Brian Jonestown Massacre (emphasis on the Jonestown). For better or for worse, Let The Poison Out has the populist quality of a campfire sing-a-long record: everyone can sing along because everyone already knows what it sounds like.
The Beets’ Stay Home is undoubtedly one of my favorite LPs to come out this year. It almost comes as a shock to me that these Queens, NY weirdos are about to wow me again this year. Let The Poison Out will be The Beet’s 3rd overall LP and the 2nd to be released this year, but will mark the first time they’ll not be releasing their material through NY label Captured Tracks. Sub Pop subsidiary Hardly Art will be the new home of The Beets. Their brand of lazy garage pop, in which they’ve so wonderfully captured in “Doing As I Do”, will find no problems sitting well next to label mates: Hunx and His Punx, Colleen Green, Jacuzzi Boys and Fergus & Geronimo.
It’s a hot, hot summer. There are some moments when the warmth turns to something else; a sort of venemous and hallucinogenic glaze that dulls your senses and renders you sedentary, laying in bed, sweat pooling along the sticky crevices of your body. This is the kind of playlist you want to listen to in the doldrums of this particular sort of heat. Here are a sampling of songs that are hazy, fleeting, heavy and hypnotic. This mix features The Growlers, Lenguas Largas, Natural Child, Night Beats, Thee Oh Sees, and more. Tracklist after the cut.
Late last year, Seattle dream pop band Seapony released their self-titled EP via their bandcamp page for the modest price of $0. Since then, they have gained label support from Double Denim, who released their EP Dreaming, and now from Sub Pop subsidiary Hardly Art, who will be releasing their debut LP Go With Me. In support of the LP’s forthcoming release, Seapony will be touring from Santa Cruz, CA all the way across the U.S. to New York, NY.
Check out a track from the LP and some dates with Eternal Summers and The Beets below. Also, make sure to grab Go With Me, which will be out May 31st via Hardly Art.
