Lounge Lizards is a murky gonzo-psych EP lathered in various forms of fuzzy acid goodness, and then some. Mike Polizze and co. have recreated, in musical form, the wildest night of spinal tap debauchery with friends who always have 40’s and a stash. In the most sincere sense, this extended play collection of songs are post-grunge, bleach-laced songwriting with Thin Lizzy-esque riffs. Standout tracks “Midnight Man”, “Voices”, and “Been Teased” are fist pumping, beer downing jams through what sounds like AM radio quality transmission. I want to put this album on after going to the bar and just drive around and party the night away. If kids these days didn’t have their “smart phones” to play with while bored in class, they would most likely be carving Purling Hiss’s name in every school desk.
On a current limited run vinyl pressing from Mexican Summer, Lounge Lizards is a definite pick up for the vinyl enthusiast and rock purist. No current tours or shows for this Philly band, but I’m sure they will want to drink for free at some point.
Purling Hiss just dropped this new video for their track, “The Hoodoo”, which will be featured on their forthcoming EP The Lounge Lizards. This may be Purling Hiss’s poppiest offering to date. Check it out!
The Lounge Lizards EP is available for pre-order now via Mexican Summer and will be released June 14th. To tide you over till then, check out our review of their latest LP Public Service Announcementhere.
There was an old blues singer in the ‘50s, and when he played live, every so often he would repeat the same motif over and over again until it was embedded into the mind of the whole audience. Purling Hiss’ Woodsist LP Public Service Announcement attains this technique. Throughout various points during the album, you’ll find the notes carved out in your memory, and after a while, the songs become familiar, even after the first listen. The sound quality could be tough listening for some people, but I think it’s quite endearing. Tracks like “Don’t Even Try It” slow down and speed up, like you’ve pressed your finger on a vinyl record, and it brings on a nostalgic feeling. Public Service Announcement sometimes just contains fragments of songs (“Bedroom”) and strange tangents (“Malice In Wonderland”) and just great songs (“Run From The City”). The album should be listened to in its entirety, rather than odd songs. And it SHOULD be listened to.
You can buy the album from Insound Vinyl. And by the way, Mike Polizze can completely shred on the guitar, as seen below:
