Recap: Atlanta Mess-Around

Shotgunning beers in the parking lot

By Jhoni Jackson

The Atlanta Mess-Around isn’t the kind of fest you want to read a detailed play-by-play of. What you want is an excellent collection of photos that captures the eagerness of the fans, the desperation of the players and the bewildering extent to which everyone partied—you know, literal displays of the excuses as to why a writer who’s actually enjoying themselves absolutely cannot report back every minute detail. We’ve got that gallery for you, plus some tidbits from the lineup in chronological order—but no in-depth critique of anything. That’s not what the Mess-Around is about. It’s about watching the bands you love and the ones you just found out you love, hanging with out-of-town friends and getting good and smashed in the process.

Podcast: It’s A Mess - Episode VI

By A.A. Yuen and Douglas J. Sweeney

“It’s a Mess” is a podcast that sandwiches some of our favorite garage jams, L.A. local bands, and a few guests between dick jokes and giggles.

In this week’s installment, the boys are joined by two guests (booking mishap). The first, an old podcast fixture, Mr. Thom Seiniger. The second is way more famous and probably better in bed: Mr. Alan Alda. Somewhere in there, they play a few sweet-ass tunes.

Here are this week’s noises:
Peach Kelli Pop - “Doo Wah Diddy” (Peach Kelli Pop)
Veronica Falls - “Found Love in a Graveyard” (Veronica Falls)
Manic Attracts - “Suicide Summer” (Eyes Wide Shut)
Sic Alps - “Breadhead” (Breadhead 7”)
Manikin - “First React” (Stop the Sirens)

End Bumper (as always): Vera Lynn - “Goodnight, Wherever You Are”

Peach Kelli Pop Announce December Tour Dates

By Joseph Rodriguez

One of our current favorite bands, Peach Kelli Pop will be crossing the Canadian border this December to play 19 dates throughout the West Coast and South United States. Their first stop will be in Porland, OR with Guantanamo Baywatch and Mean Jeans, in which they’ll be kidnapping Andrew to take on the road with them. They’ll be tearing up Texas with Bad Sports and celebrating Christmas in Orlando at The Florida’s Dying XMAS Party. This will be PKP’s first time in a majority of these cities, so you guys gotta give ‘em a warm welcome, but enough from me. Get a gander at the tour commercial above and the complete tour schedule after the jump.

Guest Mix: Falling In Love And Then Out Again

This week’s guest mix is by Minnow Jones, avid eater of pizza and one third of Peach Kelli Pop. This mix is all about falling in love and the icky realization that it’s over. Read how Minnow picked the tracks out below. You can download her mix here, and check out our other mixes here or via 8tracks

Relationships are pretty redundant. Instead of going through it in real time, you can listen to these songs and fall into love and then out of love again and again in less than an hour. Suggested listening activities: play MASH, play with cats, eat pizza.

These are songs and bands that I’m listening to a lot these days. Cold Warps are a cool Canadian band, Teen Witch put an EP out on Whoa Whoa (one of the Get Bent! give aways) that I got a copy of this summer and liked. The Eeries are a band from Philly, their harmonies are excellent. Obviously you know all about Heavy Cream.

The band I play in, Peach Kelli Pop, will be on tour in December, check out Peach’s blog  to see if we’ll be playing in your city. We should party!

Love, Minnow Jones

Review: Peach Kelli Pop - S/T

By Matt Garlick

Peach Kelli Pop is the solo effort of Allie Hanlon (of White Whires), and boy is it sweet. The album was initially released on Going Gaga Records, with a pressing of about 500, but that soon sold out. It is now being repressed on hot pink and black vinyl by the ever amazing Infinity Cat, and is also being released by the awesome Burger Records. If that’s not enough of a reason to buy the record, I don’t know what is.

It’s hard not to fall in love with Hanlon listening to this album. The record kicks off with Hanlon counting 1,2,3,4 and as drums and a familiar sounding clangy guitar comes in. I began to get lost in the eerie warmth of her voice, but was snapped out of my trance the second I realized she was inviting me to do the eggroll and cheesecake with her. It’s this playfulness that adds to the charm of not only the song, but the whole persona of Peach Kelli Pop. Tracks like “Doo Wah Diddy” and “Lover” show Hanlon’s ability as a songwriter and musician. She’s able to craft catchy pop tunes along the lines of Hunx and his Punx and Nobunny. On tracks like “Lover” and “Bunny Luv,” she’s able to write one hell of a bass line. With tambourines and claps a plenty, this is one album you don’t want to miss out on.

Bloodstains Across Ontario

By Joseph Rodriguez

Super excited to hear that Canadian based label Mammoth Cave are continuing their region-specific punk compilations! The new compilation is entitled Bloodstains Across Ontario, and it’s being done in the same fashion as its predecessors. Mammoth Cave take a handful of their favorite bands in a certain region of Canada and have them contribute a new song that is barely over the 1 minute mark. This new comp features a slew of GET BENT! favorites such as Strange Attractor, The White Wires, Peach Kelli Pop, First Base and a ton more! Oh, it even features a new track by legendary surf band Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet!

Pre-orders for the 7” are available now on Mammoth Cave. Stream the whole thing below!
