Track: Ty Segall Band - Wave Goodbye

Ty Segall did say earlier this year that he would be releasing 3 LPs in 2012. We already know about his collaborative album with White Fence, out soon through Drag City. The 2nd album to be released will be by Ty Segall Band, a collective made up of Ty, Mikal Cronin, Charles Moothart and Emily Rose Epstein. Slaughterhouse is the name of the upcoming LP and it’s first offering, “Wave Goodbye” is a Black Sabbath worship sludge hammer, and shows off Ty’s insane versatility.
Slaughterhouse will be out through In The Red June 26th.
Video: Ty Segall & White Fence - Scissor People
We got the first taste of Ty Segall & White Fence’s collaborative LP last week in the form of “I Am Not A Game”. The supergroup recently stopped by Room 205 and played another new track off the LP, “Scissor People”, and this time around we’re getting more than a taste, this is a fucking feast. “Scissor People” is a near 6 minute long shred fest delving into Hawkwind-ish territory, and a pure psych freak-out if there ever was one.
Hair drops April 24th through Drag City. Check out Ty & White Fence’s tour dates here.
Recap: Freakin’ Weekend 3
Exit/In
By Lisa Parisi
It might sound sappy and entirely un-rock and roll, but fuck it, I’m gonna go against the rules for a second and show you my soft side. The music community, OUR music community, the one that we bolster with our attendance to shows, the one which we promote with our own artwork, which we book because we know if we want it to happen, we’re gonna have to go out there and do it ourselves—it’s a beautiful, welcoming community. We don’t do major labels and private publicists, we don’t believe in separating the music makers from the music listeners, we share our booze and smokes, and pompous attitudes dare not creep into our dingy dive bars. And that is what my tenure at the Freakin’ Weekend—the epitome of the for-us-by-us mantra that we all live by—only further confirmed. How should I sum up this weekend? What should I say about Nashville? And the music, oh man, the music….
Well I’m just gonna have to tell you a story of rock and roll camaraderie mixed with southern hospitality. Because dear GET BENT readers, I’m just like you and I believe in my heart of hearts that Nashville will treat you just as warmly as it did for me. It will share its vices with you, it will roll out its welcome mats in the name of rock and roll, it will grab you when you fall down from dancing your brains out, and it will let you into its bars, houses, cars, and hearts.
Recap: Bruise Cruise 2

Long time punk enthusiast Drew Wilson is the lucky mother fucker who went on Bruise Cruise when none of the GB staff could cough up the cash. Read a recap of his sun-soaked adventures at this one-of-a-kind voyage into madness, listen to his Loud Love podcast, and check out his column on the Nashville music blog Sinizine. Wish you had been on the boat? Well, start saving those pennies now. You’ll need em.

Piling into a car at 11pm on the way to a concert is nothing new. We do that damn near every night. Driving for 16 hours on your way to a monstrous festival on board a cruise ship in the Bahamas, that’s a different story. We were doubly stoked to get to Miami for Bruise Cruise after an 11th hour invite and expedited passport delivery, given that INC (International Noise Conference) featuring the Laundry Room Squelchers and Nashville’s own Leslie Keffer was going on there the same weekend as well. If you’re going that far, it’s gonna be worth it. We made it down to Miami in time to hang out with Leslie and the noise crew at Rat Bastard’s place on South Beach before heading out for the official Bruise Cruise pre-party.
Captains Jonas Stein of Turbo Fruits & Michelle Cable of Panache Booking knew how to start the weekend off right—with an open bar hour. Sailor Jerry rum set the tone for a vacation of rum everywhere as the Stage venue filled up to capacity and probably beyond with mostly Bruisers checking each other out for the days in close quarters ahead. Jacuzzi Boys and The Soft Pack started it off with tight sets before King Khan & The Shrines got things wild with a party set that was easily the highlight of the night, even with Thee Oh Sees and Fucked Up following. We headed over to catch the end of the INC set a few blocks away, and ran smack into the height of Miami late-night. Sweet dirty dive bar with noise bands blaring and everyone already trashed by the time we arrived, the place was surrounded by crackheads pitching whatever they had to get some cash (and not deliver any drugs). By the time that show was over, everyone around had their place full of squatters for the night so we were forced to hunt out a roach motel at 4am, but whatever, Bruise Cruise was in the morning!
Track: King Khan and the Shrines - Bite My Tongue

Infamous Kukamonga cult leader King Khan teams up with youngster Mikal Cronin to bring us a split 7” on Bruise Cruise Records. The record will be released on February 10th, the day the Bruise Cruise boat sets sail from Miami, Florida to Nassau, Bahamas. If you’re not lucky enough to be aboard this sailing garage rock frenzy, at least you can listen to the records. The label sets out to release splits featuring all the bands playing the cruise in the near future. Listen to the song “Bite My Tongue” by King Khan and the Shrines and hear why they say this man’s got too much soul.
Review: Mikal Cronin - Tide 7”

Sounding indie wasn’t a bad thing back when being indie was a life choice and not just more grist for the commercial mill. So it’s not a bad thing that Mikal Cronin’s solo work has tended away from the surf punk of his youth-ier releases and more towards the alternative end of the 80s and 90s. These influences come into full bloom on Tide, a 7” which totally sounds like something that might’ve been delivered to your doorstep from a punk rock mail-order singles club in 1996. He’s not alone in this regard: groups like Estrogen Highs have been drinking from the fount of old-school indie underground records for years. Cronin, being Californian, is of course sunnier and more upbeat than the latter band, especially on B-side “You Gotta Have Someone”. “Tide” is grittier and features some gloriously messy guitar, but I don’t really buy it. No matter how hard he may try, Mikal Cronin just can’t sound dirty.
