Column: Pouring the Red Whine

GET BENT is thrilled to welcome Eric Davidson, freelance writer; singer for New Bomb Turks and LIVIDS; author of We Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988-2001 (Backbeat Books), to the blog! His first contribution is a 2011 top ten full of GB faves, obscure gems, and cool happenings, plus some predictions for the future. How lucky are we?!
2011 Might’ve Sucked in a Number of Ways, but as Usual, Goodness Snuck in’n’out of Back Doors like Cat Burglars. Cool Cat Burglars, that is. Hmm, Cool Cat Burglars, Not a Bad Band Name. Kinda “Shockabilly”-ish Though… Anyway…
“Oh fer fuck’s sake. Another year end list, in mid-January?!” Yeah, that’s right, pal. Why not? The sheer flood of interweb “writing” about music seeps into our eyeglobes and bloodveins with a demonic ferocity, and don’t y’all make like Moses frantically schlepping the beasts onto the boat anyway? Hey, if it ain’t this, it’s another rant about “Whatever happened to Tapes ‘N’ Tapes,” or “Is Lana del Ray actually pretty?”, or “Who should puke on the next Booze Cruise” or whatever the fuck seems infinitely important for about 2:13 seconds of your “busy” day. So why not the fave raves of a longtime ROCK’N’ROLL lover from the greatest city in the world, Cleveland, Ohio! (I currently live in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, hoping to pick up a Jamaican accent…)
2011 Top 11: Songs That Got Me Through The Day
By Burgers Rana
Starting with our Reader’s Poll, we’re looking back on 2011 with a series of top 10’s that will cover everything from album covers to music videos, from favorite 7“‘s to favorite LPs, so check back and see what our staff has to say as we make our way to the new year.
My top ten eleven songs that got me through the day a.k.a. more than likely the top eleven records I also enjoyed this year.

1. Kurt Vile - Baby’s Arms, Smoke Ring for My Halo (Matador)
Once you get what it is about Kurt Vile that makes him such a unique crafter of amazing gems, by then you are pretty much hooked. He might as well go by Crack Vile.
Video: Kurt Vile - Baby’s Arms
Fashion photographer Todd Cole directs the latest music video for Philly’s Kurt Vile. It depicts the rather uninteresting love lives of a young hipster couple as they prance around Los Angeles. The video is, however, a good excuse to listen to the track ‘Baby’s Arms’ from his most recent LP Smoke Ring For My Halo, released a few months back on
Matador Records. If you aren’t sappy enough for the video you can also download the track for free below.
