If you’re in New York and cognitive enough to leave the house tonight, drop the Jack In The Box taco you’re munching out on and head to Big Sky Works in Brooklyn for White Mystery’s Record Release Rock ‘N’ Roll Circus. The duo, who release a record every year on 4/20, will be dropping their new 7” People Power (streaming below) and will be accompanied by Total Slacker, Habibi, Fucking Bullshit (a hardcore cover band) and a ventriloquist, yes a ventriloquist.
As suspected and made evident in our last write-up of the all-girl Spector-fied quartet, Habibi have gone and got themselves a 7”. Out on French label Born Bad Records, the Brooklyn band have slapped down the peppy “Far From Right”, the Crystals-flavored “Sweetest Talk”, and the enchanting and ultra-chill “Sunsets”. There is no note as to how many copies have been pressed; nevertheless, this will definitely be a fun piece of wax to play at your next “DJ” night.
I recently was lucky enough to get into their sold-out Union Pool gig in good ol’ Brooklyn, and let me tell you these girls are the real thing. Fun and ever smiling, these girls have fun playing their songs—they should be, as they get to play magical Rev-Lons-style numbers. They are slated to play around the Northeast for some of February and early March, and be sure to check them in Austin as they plan to make it out to this year’s SXSW.
Check out the dates below and listen to the 7” here.
I’ve said it once and I will say it again. I am a sucker when it comes to girl garage groups. Very little, other than perhaps eating strawberry cheesecake and enjoying a beer with Thee Oh Sees rocking any Help track three feet right in front you, can beat the sweet sounds of girls harmonizing over groovy garage riffs. The latest band of gals that has my ears hankering for more jams is Brooklyn’s Habibi (Arabic for my darling/baby). Very little is up on the Internet (our rock encyclopedia) about the band other than there are four ladies in the band and that they like to spin straw into gold, GOLDEN JAMS that is. “Sweetest Talk” and “Sunsets” are standouts, but “Far From Right” is far from being a throwaway either.
No immediate plans for touring nor any physical release are scheduled on the horizon, but I’m sure that will all change as the girls have been playing some high profile shows. They just opened at the NYC record release show for the new Strange Boys album.
UPDATE: This band is on the prowl, having just been picked up by Panache Booking (the good folks behind Bruise Cruise and setting up some sick shows with Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Bare Wires, Xray Eyeballs, and Turbo Fruits, just to name a few), and they have an upcoming single, long player, and a spring tour in the works. They’re so hot, you don’t wanna stand too close or ya might get burned.
