Guest Mix: Can Con Killers
Ketamines’ Paul Lawton is a busy guy, between touring (dates here), the recent release of Spaced Out, and running Mammoth Cave Recording Co. So it’s pretty neat that he found some time to make us a mix of his current favorite Canadian bands. Download the mix here and check out our other guest mixes here.
1. Cousins (Halifax, NS) - Speech - Cousins released this song on a 7” last summer, and I just redescovered it on their brilliant new LP The Palm at the End of the Mind (Saved by Vinyl). Speech was my Summer jam last year, and it is getting me right back in the proverbial mood…
Guest Mix: Call Me On The Telephone
Nightmare Boyzzz last put out a split and the Nuclear Summer 7”, after which they toured around the states and played some superb shows at SXSW. They’re currently working on some new songs and planning a summer tour - don’t miss ‘em if they happen to come through your town! Download their mix here and browse our other mixes here.
Remember when you actually called your friend up just to chat…? Nightmare Boyzzz do, and they put together some music for the occasion!
We’re here to wipe the tear drops off your telephone and keep your ears ringing. These twelve phone related tunes are sure to keep you connected to the one you love, and hung up on rock n roll…

Guest Mix: Chromewaves Radio
Chromewaves Radio is a music blog and online radio stream based out of Los Angeles, featuring indie, garage, electronic and alternative music. They’re all about “shiny new music,” and so are we! Today we’re swapping guest mixes - here’s a sampler of what Ariel listened to during his formative years. Check out our mix for them here, download his mix here and listen to our other guest mixes at 8tracks.
Big thanks to Get Bent for asking me to do a guest mix. I picked a set of songs that represent what has influenced a lot of my tastes today. They’re mostly what I was listening to in my teens/early 20’s, and some are what I probably would have been listening to if the internet was around then. I hope you enjoy.
Guest Mix: C.M. Ruiz of CMRTYZ
C.M. Ruiz of CMRTYZ is responsible for the artwork on several albums of GET BENT favorites - namely, Ketamines, Dead Ghosts, Fungi Girls and Cola Freaks. They also recently threw some great shows in Austin - SiiickXSW ruled! You can download his mix here, and check out our other mixes here.
Guest Mix: Teenanger
We’re really excited about Toronto punx, Teenanger. They just released Frights off of their own label, Telephone Explosion! Watch their latest music video here, and read the review for their latest LP here. Cover art by Jeremy Jansen.
1.The Electric Prunes / Never Had it Better
Not much else to say other than this song is badass. Not off my fav
Prunes record…but my fav Prunes song for sure.
Guest Mix: Trouble In Mind Records’ My Dads A Hells Angel (a.k.a. Soft Sounds For Tough People)
Trouble In Mind Records is Bill and Lisa Roe of CoCoComa. They aim to “prove that the 2 1/2 minute pop song is alive and well,” and they sure deliver. Trouble in Mind is responsible for putting out work by GET BENT favorites — Apache Dropout, Ty Segall, Wax Museums, and White Wires to name a few. Download their guest mix here, and check out our other guest mixes here.
Somehow we can’t shake the “garagepunk” label. When we started to concoct our next musical project after CoCoComa, we thought long & hard about what it was we ACTUALLY listened to & were influenced by on a more visceral level & (for better or for worse) it was bands like Left Banke, Millennium, Lemon Pipers & other assorted soft-psych & bubblegum stuff. If you step back and look at most of the records our label has released, you will notice a similar thread; a pop element regardless of the larger genre an artist may fit into, much like the ones on this mix. On the surface alot of these songs may seem cheezy, but when listened to closely, one can discover some really awesome tunes & unique sounds! (Also we can’t get enough horns and harpsichord as you can probably see.) Or maybe we’re just gettin’ soft - who knows?
Guest Mix: White Mystery’s Punk Love Mixtape
GET BENT’s favorite pair of gingers, White Mystery, handcrafted a punk love mixtape, just for you guys on this special, uber lovey dovey day! Download it here and check out our other mixes here. Tracklist after the cut.
What is love, and why does it require commemoration? Valentine’s Day is a memorial since my best friend and band-mate Chris “Playboy” Saathoff was killed on February 14, 2004. This mix tape compiles songs I hear at the intersection of romance and sorrow.
Deep cuts include “Baby” from the last live concert Chris Playboy and I played on In the Red, an alternate version of “Girl U Want” by Devo, wisdom from legends like Richard Hell, Greg Cartwright, and old Detroit soul legend Nathaniel Mayer who I had the pleasure to play with on Valentine’s Day in Las Vegas many years ago. Check out White Mystery on tour this spring and hug your friends. Enjoy!
