Best Of Year One: Mixes, Giveaways & Events

In addition to our birthday shows, we’re celebrating our one year anniversary by looking back over our favorite news, reviews, features, and mixes, as Joseph, Kristen, Mariana, and Sonam make their picks for Best of Year One. And to show how far we’ve come, we’re also switching back to our original look for the week. It’s been an amazing twelve months, and we look forward to what the next twelve will bring. Thanks for reading.
There’s something intensely special about giving someone music, in any form. It could be via mix, gifting a record or tape, through making your friend listen to a song you love. Over the past year, we’ve shared music in every way we know how. Besides writing about it, we’ve made you seventy-six mixes—whether it’s compiled by the staff, a themed videogram, or put together by your favorite band. We’ve given away over a hundred records, tapes and concert tickets. Here’s to another another year of giving as much as I can to the people who’ve given me the best thing I could’ve asked for—a reason to get out of bed every morning.
Compiled below is a list of some of our favorite giveaways, events and mixes. If you want to contribute, contact me. - Sonam Parikh, Managing Editor
Elemental Hype and GET BENT! Present: Ty Segall w/ White Fence and Useless Eaters

We’ve been going insane trying to get our 1 year anniversary shows together, but as always, we have tons more going on. GET BENT! is teaming up with our friends at Elemental Hype, who we did the Pre-Psych Fest Showcase with a few weeks back, to bring you another stellar show. On May 24th at Walter’s in Houston, TX we bring you 3 of the most prolific acts out there today: Ty Segall, White Fence and Useless Eaters. Pre-sale tickets are available now, and you might want to get on that because this one will sell out! Stream Ty Segall and White Fence’s recent session at Room 205 below and get a glimpse of what you’re in store for.
GET BENT Turns One!

On May 17, 2011, GET BENT launched with its first post, and we’ve been barreling ahead ever since. It’s hard to believe that it’s really been a year since we started cause we’ve had so much fun getting to know you all and sharing some of our favorite tunes. To celebrate the occasion, we’re excited to announce the first in what we hope will be a long line of GET BENT BIRTHDAY BASHES!
There are festivals seemingly every weekend, but it’s expensive, and requires traveling and planning ahead. So instead of making you come to us, we’re coming to four cities in four days, showcasing some of our favorite bands and DJs from the area for four kickin’ nights of mad jams, dirty dancing, and free cake.
And it wouldn’t be GET BENT if we didn’t give something away. Comment on this post to be entered for a free ticket to the show, but be sure to note which city. RSVP on facebook for updates.

It’s dirty Southern rock n roll for Austin with locals John Wesley Coleman, Dikes of Holland, and Grape St., plus Memphis heavyweight hitters Modern Convenience. School’s out, and Rubberneck co-founder and photographer Jon Chamberlain will be spinning the tunes, which only can mean one thing: it’s time to party.

California has it comin’. We’re teaming up with KXLU Los Angeles 88.9fm to bring you a sampling of some of our favorite West Coast bands. Pangea, King Lollipop, Blue Jungle, and Shark Toys (with staffer Daniel on guitar!) will be joined by new GB member and KXLU DJ Mukta, pumping the jams. But wait, there’s more! A very special guest will make a late night appearance, and we’ll guarantee those panties will get reeaalll wet. Can’t tell you who, only way to cure that blue box is to go and find out.
If that wasn’t enough, it’s also another GET BENT birthday. Staff writer and Kill/Hurt Recordings co-founder Kat Bee is turning 24, and here at GB, we’re family. So double the trouble, and come get shitty with us.
UPDATE: We’re pleased to announce the addition of Matthew Melton’s new band, Warm Soda! That’s 6 bands, so don’t be late, or you might miss one of these amazing acts!

Elemental Hype and GET BENT! Present: The Pre-Psych Fest Showcase w/ Acid Baby Jesus, Night Beats, Paint Fumes and Psychic Palms

Did you really think we were going to stop partying just because SXSW is over? Nope. And we’re going to make sure you don’t either. As you may know Austin Psych Fest is only a month away, but we’ve teamed up with the amazing Elemental Hype, a booking collective based out of Houston, to bring you The Pre-Psych Fest Showcase at Walter’s April 26th. Co-headlining will be Acid Baby Jesus, four crazy guys from Greece who don’t know the meaning of the word rest, and Night Beats, who closed out our recent show at Trailer Space during SXSW. Supporting this already stellar line-up will be Paint Fumes, Slovenly Recordings newest force to be reckoned with, and Psychic Palms, Houston’s most finest, swingingest rockers. If you’re in Houston or just passing through on your way to Psych Fest this is definitely one show that you’re not going to want to miss. Pre-sale tickets are on sale now, and you’re going to want to snag some quick because prices will go up! RSVP to the Facebook event here, and remember to bring drugs!
GET BENT and RUBBERNECK present at Beerland for SXSW
We previewed our massive 30 band blowout yesterday with an 8tracks mix, but don’t forget about our two other SXSW shows! Supporting the Boys will be 2 of Htown’s best up and comers: Psychic Palms, who have been absolutely tearing shit up lately, and the garage-pop trio Mikey & The Drags.

Rubberneck & GET BENT Present: Rubberneck Zine Vol. 3: The Gonerfest 8 Edition Release Party

We at GET BENT are super thrilled to be a part of Rubberneck Zine’s upcoming release party for their upcoming issue, Vol. 3: The Gonerfest 8 Editon. Rubberneck, for those unfamiliar, is self-described as “an all photo zine spotlighting bands and musicians that matter. It is 6 bucks, black and white and might make you pee your pants. A zine like they used to make ‘em.” Rubberneck is based out of Austin, TX and does a majority of their photography locally, but for vol. 3 they are covering the most recent Gonerfest in Memphis. Missed out on Gonerfest this year? No problem. In addition to releasing a brand spanking new issue, Rubberneck and GET BENT will be presenting some of Tennessee’s most rockin’, booze-swilling bands: Manatees, Sharp Balloons, Natural Child and Hans Condor.
Shit gets nuts December 11th at The Hi-Tone Cafe in Memphis, TN. Just $7 at the door gets you into the party. You can buy tickets online here, and track the event on last.fm here. And hey, if you’re poor like me, we’re going to be giving away 2 free tickets. Want ‘em? All you gotta do is RSVP to the Facebook event and comment with anything that’s on your mind. Check out Rubberneck’s site to get samples of their work and to purchase previous issues.

UPDATE: We are sad to say that Hans Condor is no more, and unfortunately, that means they will not be playing this show on Sunday.

Our first promoted show, with the help of the amazing dudes at Pegstar.net, will be on December 30th at Fitzgerald’s in Houston, TX. Yes, I know that’s over a month away, but did you see who’s playing? Only one of the best live acts around, and a personal favorite of ours, Quintron & Miss Pussycat! Like I said, this is just the first of many shows we’ll be promoting and or presenting. We’ll be coming at you in cities like Philadelphia, Nashville, Memphis, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Milwaukee and a ton others.
