Colleen Green debuted with this album, on cassette, in 2010. Now Art Fag Recordings has re-released Milo Goes to Compton on LP. Doing so was a worthy project, if for no other reason than to pull the sheen of her pop songs out of their gritty comfort zone and imprint it onto vinyl.
The comfort zone, and perhaps Green’s desired aesthetic, seems to be to make shout-outs to early punk and other kinds of 70s rock (Descendents, Ramones, Little Peggy March). But her voice is made for the kind of psyched-out sound that has been revived in post-milennial garage rock, and her generous covers coat these 70s references in her unique personality. The songs all star her sweet-but-husky vocals and distorted guitar backed up by very minimal drumming. Her simple beat crafting is, in fact, one of Milo Goes To Compton’s most notable features, because it precariously places the album in the context of pop music. Listen to “The Day I Fell In Love With You” if you’re wondering what I mean. The song sounds like it’s straight off of Psychocandy. When she is not pounding persistently on a bass drum, sundry non-abrasive drum machine settings make the skeleton for her crooning chord progressions.
Listen to “Worship You” below, a song that makes you wish you could mosh in the swimming pool.
Scottish duo Strawberry Whiplash has been releasing fun little twee pop singles for the past several years, and now finally a full-length is available through California indie label Matinee Recordings. Entitled Hits In The Car, the album is loaded with light, fizzy late 80s hook-filled jangle pop. Most of it is light, breezy, and fun, but “It Came To Nothing” adds some moody noise and ends up sounding closer to Colleen Green or the Vivian Girls. Great stuff.
The Kinks are kind of an essential to every music lover’s library. I’m sure we can all recall listening to the Kinks for the first time and realizing, Wow, what have I been doing with my life until now?
Neotomic Webzine has created a label, Neotomic Records, and in doing so is providing an opportunity for us to fall in love with the Kinks all over again. Being the first ever release, the label will be creating a tribute to the Kinks featuring an eclectic range of artists such as King Lollipop, Colleen Green, White Wires, Unnatural Helpers and many more. Neotomic wants to put this bad boy on tape, and needs a little help. A kickstarter has been created, so check out the video, and if you like what you hear, go on ahead and support a good label and some good people.
Colleen Green has released a new LP entitled, Milo Goes To Compton. The groovy gal released her album on Art Fag and is available for digital download as well as limited edition green vinyl, respectively.
Starting with our Reader’s Poll, we’re looking back on 2011 with a series of top 10’s that will cover everything from album covers to music videos, from favorite 7“‘s to favorite LPs, so check back and see what our staff has to say as we make our way to the new year.
There are a lot of albums that came out this year that I can guarantee are amazing, but I just haven’t listened to them yet. So, for my best of 2011 list, I decided to not focus on the music but on the cover art. Specifically, illustrated cover art as it’s one of my favorite styles and it goes so well with punk and garage music, which is our bread and butter here at Get Bent! A small disclaimer: this ranking is solely based on the art, not the music (though I admit my number one may be biased by the fact that I think it’s the best album of the year). So, here are my Top 10 (+1) Illustrated Album Covers of 2011:
In the modern musical landscape, being a lo-fi artist can be difficult. It can be a challenge to execute the sound without it becoming gimmicky. What makes Colleen Green’s Cujo EP work so well is that the drum machine, toy instruments, fuzzy guitar, and multi-tracked reverbed vocals aren’t merely an aesthetic. They’re sincerely the way Green can make her garage pop music without the aide of a band.
Colleen Green, first and foremost, writes catchy songs. The heavy guitar on tracks like “Rabid Love” and the pummelling drum machine that runs throughout help crank up the punk side of Cujo and hit that sweet spot between pop-punk and noise rock that Wavves has been trying to achieve for years.
Get the Cujo EP from Art Fag Recordings and listen to “Rabid Love” below.
Blaze up a green one and take a trip through the world of an animated stoner girl’s day in Colleen Green’s video for “Green One” taken from her EP of the same name.
Green One is available now on Hardly Art. You can also pick up her new EP Cujo from Art Fag.
The Beets’ Stay Home is undoubtedly one of my favorite LPs to come out this year. It almost comes as a shock to me that these Queens, NY weirdos are about to wow me again this year. Let The Poison Out will be The Beet’s 3rd overall LP and the 2nd to be released this year, but will mark the first time they’ll not be releasing their material through NY label Captured Tracks. Sub Pop subsidiary Hardly Art will be the new home of The Beets. Their brand of lazy garage pop, in which they’ve so wonderfully captured in “Doing As I Do”, will find no problems sitting well next to label mates: Hunx and His Punx, Colleen Green, Jacuzzi Boys and Fergus & Geronimo.
Colleen Green sure makes a ton a noise for just one person. Armed with just a drum machine and a big muff pedal with no off switch, Colleen Green creates a huge wall of fuzzy, punk sound landing somewhere in-between The Breeders and The Ramones. “Rabid Love” is the first cut from her impending 12” EP Cujo, which will mark her second EP release of 2011, the first being Green One released via Hardly Art earlier this year. Not much has changed since Green One, but the simplistic formula Colleen uses has enough charm, appeal and kick ass song writing to make Cujo a must have.
