Suicide Squeeze has been dishing out the goods with releases from Bleached, Dirty Beaches, The Coathangers, and now with an impending release from Candadian noise-punk trio, Nü Sensae. Suicide Squeeze will be releasing a digital version of Nü Sensae’s formally vinyl only EP (via Fast Weapons) Tea Swamp Park, an EP I was gushing all over a few months back. In addition to the EP re-release of the EP, Nü Sensae will be touring the U.S this March opening for EMA on a few select dates. Listen to “Gumbo” from Tea Swamp Park below and check out the full tour schedule after the jump.
You can download the digital version of Tea Swamp Park through Suicide Squeeze March 6th.
It’s songs like “Searching Through The Past”, by L.A.’s Bleached that make me miss and long for the summer–especially in this long and grey winter. With its airy guitar riff and sly solo, the sister duo of Jennifer and Jessica Calvin have been on a non-stop run of belting out catchy numbers that are, just like the summer, carefree and fun. The 7” itself is already sold out at the Suicide Squeeze store, but perhaps some copies are still available at shows. Either way, seeing Bleached is a prize enough as they are nothing but a pleasure to see.
If you are able to venture out to a show, also be sure to request the gnarly-fi Phil Spector girl group-esque B-side, “Electric Chair”. It sounds creepy, it’s about electrocuting yourself, and you can’t help but sway and whistle along. I want more and more Bleached all the time.
We just shared a new Bleached track with you the other day from their upcoming Suicide Squeeze 7”. We’ve already talked about Veronica Falls’ great new record. Both bands have got guitar-driven pop bliss down pat. If ya dig, you should go catch them on tour! Veronica Falls will be ringing in the New Year in Europe, but will make making their way to North America to play select dates with Bleached in February. Check the dates below.
If my sister and I were cooler, we could be like Bleached. This post-Mika Miko sibling duo (Jennifer and Jessica Clavin) have a 7” (Searching Through the Past) coming out on December 6 on Suicide Squeeze. If you’re into noisy guitar pop with a punk edge, this little jam burns with enough energy and enough repetition that it’s gonna be stuck in your head the rest of the day. Recommended if you liked the recently released Think of You single. Check it out below.
It’s no big secret that we absolutely love Bleached at GET BENT!, myself specifically since I’m always posting about them. “Searching Through The Past” is the sugary A-side of their new 7” (3rd of the year) and part of the ongoing Suicide Squeeze Singles Series. When I said sugary I also should of said spicy. True, the song plays like a brill building girl pop hit but it adds an early Misfits (Static Age) punk edge.
If I had to think of my favorite band of 2011 who haven’t released a full length LP yet, I’d have to choose Bleached. With just 2 7”s under their belt, this L.A. foursome has had me wearing my needle out. In addition to their gnarly tunes, they’ve also released some cool videos. You might remember the Warhol inspired video for “Dazed” we featured awhile back, and now they’ve just dropped “Think of You” directed by Lana Kim, who directed a few videos for Jessie and Jennifer Clavin’s former band Mika Miko. “Think of You” features a ton of cameos with the likes of Tim Koh of Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti and Randy Randall and Dean Spunt of No Age. See if you can spot them all.
It probably would of been a better idea if I had titled this post “Mika MikoDid Daytrotter”, as I probably will have an angry mob of people after me who thought the L.A. punk band had reformed. This session was actually “unintentionally buried” in 2009 and is just now seeing the light of day. Being one of their very last recordings, this session actually serves as one of the most primal recordings I’ve heard from the band. The live setting fit them accordingly in a territory they knew all to well.
Last week we showed the Warhol inspired video for Bleached’s “Dazed”. Now we have “Think of You”, the a-side of their upcoming 7” Carter. “Think Of You” is definitely not what you would expect from the former girls of punk outfit Mika Miko. They drop their rougher punk sensibilities and serve up a heart felt, California sunshine pop number. Hearing a new side of these girls is definitely refreshing. Versatility is going to be the key for Bleached, and their already showing it.
If Bleached sounds familiar to you at all, it may be because the core members are sisters, Jennifer and Jessie Clavin of the now defunct Mika Miko. Bleached share the same affinity for classic L.A. punk as Miko Mika did, but add a nice layer of washy, surf guitar on top.
