Review: The People’s Temple - Still (the Same) 7”

By Ruby Perez
Making music with family always ends up being a recipe for something great. The creative collaborations between siblings makes for something special, a kind of musical monster that could only be created by people as close as family. Records that sound like it’s 1964 when it’s 2012 are just an added plus when these types of musical babies are born. Now, if you take two sets of brothers you’re bound to run into an even bigger ball of musical madness. Formed by the Szegedy and Young brothers, the People’s Temple are one of those vintage sounding bands that leave me wanting to beg my sister to drop out of school and start a rock ‘n’ roll group.
Released on Goodbye Boozy Records, Still (the Same) is a lovely little 7” that is not only extremely pleasant to listen to, but contains the kind of stripped down, raw tunes some of us are always looking for. The everpresent lo-fi fog that covers many garage albums can become too much, but the People’s Temple do it right. The intro to the title track reminds me of a slowed down, fuzzed-out “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”. The song later progresses and sharply stems into something much different than a Ramones’ song, but still keeps intact that good feeling the Ramones have always known how to transcend through music.
Overall, the 7” is a wonderful mixture of psychedelic textures and muffled guitars that make you think it was recorded in your best friend’s living room circa 1962. Check out “See Him Go” by the Szegedy and Young brothers below.
