Guest Mix: Mongrel Zine

Take a romp through the archives of the Vancouver based Mongrel Zine, an old fashioned black and white zine that features interviews and reviews of the best in the underground. They also include a CD mix with every issue, so they’ve picked some of their favorites for this tasty little comp of the comps. Download it here. Listen to more mixes here.

1. No Love - RED MASS (S/T 12”, New Romance for Kids, 2009)
I don’t think it’ll come as a shock to anyone that we’re big fans of Red Mass. We’ve had a tune from Choyce on every comp so far. This track was on MZ Vol. 3.

2. Juli Don’t Use That Pillow - STRANGE ATTRACTOR (unreleased, 2011)
Loud, brash garage rock by Jeff Houle (interview in MZ#10), who also plays in Sudbury trio Statues, entirely recorded on a computer in his basement.

3. Elephant - RICHARD CATWRANGLEUR (House of the Spirit Wrestler CASS, 2010)
A pop song of the finest grade. Listen to his whole album at richardcatwrangleur.bandcamp.com.

4. Left Behind - BROKEN JUGS (unreleased, 2010)
New band from Martin Dupras of Montreal’s great garage bands Scat Rag Boosters, Royal Routes, The Suppressors, and the short-lived but amazing Thee B-Sides. Mart masters our CD comps and always sends them back with a ‘hidden’ Broken Jugs track at the end!

5. Primitiv - JACK OF HEART (Eureka/Primitiv 7”, Slovenly, 2010)
Sexually depraved rock’n’roll from the South of France (interview in MZ#10). You’ve never heard a cover of Primitive quite like this!

6. Coeur en Feu - GIGI FRENCH (Cannelle CD, 2010)
French ye-ye at its best by chameleon Gigi French aka Giselle Numba One (interview in MZ#9).

7. Any Lou (Demo) - DEMON’S CLAWS (unreleased, 2009)
Our Demon’s Claws interview from MZ#6 was called by Dusted Mag “probably the best written piece on the lightly documented Demon’s Claws”.

8. Northern Lights - MOVIE STAR JUNKIES (Last Rapes of Mr. Teach split 7”, Shit in Can Records, 2009)
There’s an interview with the Movie Star Junkies coming up in MZ#11 out Jan 2012!

9. Don’t Care Blues - BLOODSHOT BILL (unreleased, 2011)
We’re always stoked to get a track from Bloodshot Bill. This one was on our Best of MZ #103 comp. We’ve interviewed Bloodshot Bill tonnes, in MZs #3 and #6 and with King Khan as Tandoori Knights in MZ#8.

10. Shut It (Demo) - YUNG MUMS (unreleased, 2011)
It’s no coincidence that this trio has a poster of The Dishrags up in their jamspace! Get their cassette from Scumbuzz Records.

11. I Hate Being In Love - AMY & THE ANGELS (Making Waves LP, Girlfriend Records, 1981)
This song bookended our Stef Petticoat article in MZ#5. We also ran an interview with Stef fans The Spits in that same issue.

12. What to Do - DEAD GHOSTS (S/T CDR, Milk N Herpes, 2008)
This was the first song on our first comp, MZ Vol. 1 included with MZ#4. Four years later, this is still a great fucking song.
